Every business has two things it rarely examines side by side: who it actually is, and how it actually goes to market. When those drift apart, marketing starts working against you — and no amount of better tactics closes the distance.
Your values, your real positioning, the voice you use when nobody is watching, the customer you're genuinely best for.
The channels you actually run, the offers you actually lead with, the messaging that actually goes out the door.
This framework measures that gap across five dimensions and tells you which one is costing you the most.
Five short sections, one per dimension. Around twelve minutes, and your scored report arrives by email.
The Symptoms
Misalignment rarely announces itself. It shows up as things that feel harder than they should be.
Your marketing produces leads, but the wrong ones — people you don't especially want to work with.
You keep rewriting your website and it still never quite sounds right.
Two people on your team describe what you do in two different ways, and both are technically correct.
Campaigns work once, then don't, and nobody can explain why either time.
You feel like you're performing a version of your business that isn't quite the real one.
Your best clients came from referral, and you can't reproduce that through marketing.
You've adopted a channel because competitors are there, not because your buyers are.
Every marketing decision feels like it needs your personal approval, because there's no shared definition to decide against.
If three or more of those land — the problem isn't your tactics. It's that nobody has ever written down what you are, so every decision gets re-litigated from scratch.
The Framework
Each dimension is scored one to five. Your report leads with your lowest score, because the lowest dimension is almost always the actual constraint.
Whether your team can articulate who the business is and why it exists — without reading from the website. This is the foundation; a weak score here caps every other dimension regardless of how well they score individually.
The testAsk three people on your team, separately, why the business exists. If you get three different answers, this dimension is your starting point.
Whether your messaging speaks to what your ideal buyers actually care about, or to what you find most interesting about your own work. These are frequently not the same thing, and the gap between them is invisible from the inside.
The testRead your homepage headline. Does it describe an outcome your customer wants, or a service you deliver? Most say the second and assume it reads as the first.
Whether the channels you invest in are where your buyers actually make decisions, or where you assumed they were. Channel choice made by imitation rather than evidence is one of the most expensive quiet mistakes in small business marketing.
The testName the channel that produced your last five best customers. If you can't, you are allocating budget on instinct.
Whether your brand looks and sounds like the same business everywhere it appears — website, proposals, invoices, social, the way you answer the phone. Inconsistency doesn't read as variety; it reads as instability.
The testPut your website, your last proposal, and your last three social posts side by side. Would a stranger identify them as one company?
Whether everyone who represents the business shares one definition of it. This is the dimension that determines whether alignment survives your absence — and it's the one most often skipped, because it feels like an internal issue rather than a marketing one.
The testIf you were unreachable for two weeks, could your team make a messaging decision without you and get it right?
Your Report
A number on its own is trivia. The report tells you which dimension to fix first and why.
Out of 25, with a band explaining what that range actually means in practice.
All five scored individually, so you can see where you're strong and where the drag is.
The one dimension holding the others back, named plainly, with why it matters most.
What to fix first, second, and third — in an order that compounds rather than scatters.
How It Works
This one takes longer than our other free tools, deliberately. Five dimensions can't be assessed in ninety seconds without producing a result you'd be right to ignore.
One per dimension. Plain-language questions written for owners, not marketers. Answer as the business actually is, not as you'd like it to be — a flattering score helps nobody.
Your answers are scored against the framework, and we identify which dimension is acting as the binding constraint on the others.
Your scored Alignment Report by email, leading with your lowest dimension and a prioritised path. Optional: book a free session to pressure-test it.
Want the faster version first? The Brand Clarity Engine™ takes two minutes and gives you draft messaging. This framework tells you whether that messaging will actually hold once it meets the rest of your business.
